Our Song

Our Song

By Susie Teramura

A bit behind

On all the

New Year’s stuff

No resolutions,

No goals made,

No one word

Chosen to hang

2018 on.

New Year’s

Passed quietly

At our house

Just husband

And me

Folding laundry

By the fire,

Too busy talking

To join in

With the ringing

But today

I got time

To slow

And crack open

My new

Leather journal.

It took a while

To start writing,

Afraid to

Mess up,

Funny part

After all that

I messed up on

The very first letter

Of the very first word.

So much for new,

And clean,

And pretty,

But as I

Sink down,

And bury into

That black ink

I realize

There is something

Nice about

That mistake,

The pressure

Not to ruin things

I have already

Done it.

Now I am able

To make a mess.

To write my thoughts

Uninhibited and free.

Words, like

For my thoughts,

Take time

To try on

And choose.

Things get messy

And strewn all about

But I start choosing,

And writing,

And thinking,

And talking to

You about

The year ahead,

Sharing my

Feelings about

Being behind,

And being unable

To find

My steps

In this

2018 dance,

And how

The rhythm seems

Too fast for

My feet to

Find the way,

But then

You speak

So kindly.

“Quiet… listen,

Lean back into Me,

Rest and hear

Your own

If you can

Hear it,

You will see

You are

…. Right

Stop looking

At everyone

Else’s feet

And look

At me

Then we

Can dance

And you

Will be free. “

Breathing in deep

I let those

Words sink

And settle

And comfort

My heart

You have a plan

And purpose

Just for me

It may not be

Neat or

Easy to see but

You know the song

You’re making in me

I close my journal

And decide

This year

Instead of resolutions

And lists

To have courage

In a new

And different

Kind of way,

To hold my hands

Out wide,

And empty,

To take

And receive

All that You

Want to

Give to me,

And not worry about

The mess

Or keeping up,

And to let

You lead

Our dance

Full and free

And listen only

To the song

You are

Singing over me.

Zephaniah 3:17 (ICB)

The Lord your God is with you.

The mighty One will save you.

The Lord will be happy with you.

You will rest in his love.

He will sing and be joyful about you.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (MSG)

I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for

  1. Beautiful poetic reflection, Susie. I love how you move from experiencing pressure and anxiety to a resting trust in God’s specific requirement for you. Lovely. I try to solve the discouraged because of messing up a new blank page feeling with my wayward handwriting by using pens with rub out ends. It certainly comes in useful at times! Blessings on your year ahead. 😊💜

    1. Joy- Thanks so much! I think I write to remind myself whats true. I need something louder than my thoughts! I will have to get on of those pens! They sound great! Thanks so much for visiting me today! I brightened my day! With love

  2. Susie, love your Big Bold Blooms and love ‘Our Song’ – have missed you, always enjoy your writing. Love this: Stop looking
    At everyone
    Else’s feet
    And look
    At me
    Then we
    Can dance
    And you
    Will be free.
Right there with you, so glad you put rhythm and words to it 🙂

    1. Hi Paris!! So great to connect with you here. I have a really hard time with comparison and God is showing me to run my own race and share my own story and to just listen to Him instead of the voices that say otherwise. So glad to hear from you. I hope you had a beautiful Christmas and that your new year is full of blessings already. with hugs and love

  3. This truly inspires my heart, Susie. With you, I want to look up to Jesus, not at what everyone else is doing. To not worry about messing up, but to keep my hands open to what God has in store for me. Thank you so much! Love and hugs to you! Welcome back!!!

    1. Hi Trudy! so nice to hear from you. I always feel happy to see a note from you- such a lift! I think it is very hard to let go of the comfortable safe things and open my hands to Him. It requires me to trust Him to care for my feelings and tend to my soul. But this is were we are satisfied, right next to him. 🙂 I am excited to see what He has in store for you too! He has great things!! hugs and loves back at you!! 🙂

  4. Hi Susie,
What a joy to see you back here in this space and your words are simply beautiful about your thoughts for the new year! I could picture you with your family and feel your freedom and light heart (something I am feeling now too!) and I can so relate with your thoughts on comparison. I’m prone to letting those thoughts and feelings overtake me and your words resonate with me that we have to keep our eyes on God, not others and find our true joy and freedom in him.

These words are both powerful and beautiful and this post in one of my favorites of yours! So so so good to have you back and sharing your heart with us!! Sending so much love to you today! xoxo

  5. Wow! That is the very same verse has been placing in my heart the last few weeks! He will quiet us with His love and rejoice over us with singing; He is our valiant warrior!
